Brasstown Bald
Pack your camera for the half-mile climb from the parking lot to the Brasstown Bald Visitors Center and Observation Deck, where you can soak in breathtaking, 360-degree views. Brasstown Bald is the states highest peak of 4,784 feet above sea level. On clear days, you’ll see four states, even without the help of the on-site telescopes. Not-so-sunny days also offer beautiful photo ops, allowing you to peer down upon cloud tops or photograph fog-filled valleys. Be warned, however, that the hike to the top is pretty steep, so take advantage of the shuttle service if necessary.
The Appalachian Trail
The Appalachian Trail begins in Georgia at Springer Mountain and leaves the Peach State 79 miles later at Bly Gap. The rugged, often rocky terrain reaches a height of more than 4400 feet and never dips below 2500 feet. The high point of the trail is at Blood Mountain (4,461 ft.) while the low point is Dicks Creek Gap (2,675 ft.) Access to the beginning of the Appalachian Trail is by foot from Amicalola Falls State Park.
High Shoals Trail
High Shoals Scenic Area and Falls Trail is a 2.6 mile out and back trail located near Hiawassee, Georgia. The contrast between the power and gentleness of the water’s flow may be what attracts so many to visit these wonders of nature.
High Shoals scenic trail features a waterfall and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking and is accessible year-round. You have to cross a small creek to get to the parking area; sometimes this can be difficult in a car depending on the water level. Dogs are able to use this trail.
Lake Chatuge Trail
Located just minutes from downtown Hiawassee along GA 288 is the Lake Chatuge Recreation Area. This location is idea for outdoor adventurers looking for a short and low impact hiking trail. The trail is more of a stroll than a hike depending on how slow or fast your feet want to travel. The recreation area is cradled along a southwestern inlet channel of Lake Chatuge.
The Lake Chatuge Trail winds thru a wooded shoreline area with various seasonal wildflowers and picturesque views of the beautiful sky blue waters of Lake Chatuge bordered by grand mountains stretching across the horizon. Dogs are welcome though required to be on a leash. Mountain bikes and horseback riding is not permitted.
